Study TitleRecreation participation survey, Australia, February 1991
Primary InvestigatorDepartment of the Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories
ADA IDau.edu.anu.ada.ddi.00606
AbstractThe national Recreation Participation Survey examines the nature and frequency of participation in recreation and leisure activities and facility usage among Australians 14 years and over, and how these patterns vary among different socio-economic groups. The survey also identifies the major constraints on both participation and facility utilisation. This survey is the sixth in a series of such surveys, the first of which was conducted in April 1985. The series will be used to study longitudinal trends. Topics covered include frequency of participation in various leisure time and social activities during the last week and during the last month, both at the respondent's home and away from home; reasons for participation; activities that the respondent did not do but would have liked to; reasons for not doing these activities; and the use of public and commercial leisure facilities. Background variables include age, sex, income level, education, marital status, ethnicity, employment status, occupation, geographical location, size of household, and age of children in the household.

Methodology Content
Sampling Proceduremulit-stage area cluster sample with quota This sample was selected by the sampling technique used by AGB McNair each weekend. The sampling procedure was initially adopted in 1984 and has been modified over time to improve the validity of results. Since the previous survey in this series, the cluster size has been reduced and the number of clusters has been increased. Interviews were conducted within each of the 200 area clusters chosen within 13 strata based upon the six states and territories split into urban and rural categories. A random starting point was nominated and a cluster of consecutive households called upon. One person only was interviewed in each household, and equal numbers of effective interviews with males and females aged 14 years and over, based on age quota, were obtained in each sample locality. Clusters consisted of five interviews.
