Series NameAustralian Gallup Polls
Primary InvestigatorDepartment of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs
ADA IDau.edu.anu.ada.ddi.00590
AbstractThe Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs commissioned McNair Andersion Associates to conduct this poll of attitudes to immigration as part of the regular McNair Market Monitor for two weekends in June 1985. The immigration poll consisted of five questions concerning attitudes to the size of migrant intake, rights of family members to migrate, rights of successful business workers to migrate, the global approach to refugees, and the impact of migrants on unemployment. Background variables include household composition, country of birth, marital status, level of education, age and sex.

Methodology Content
Sampling Proceduremulti-stage sample with age and sex quotas.;On each of two weekends, 150 small clusters of households throughout the six states and two territories were selected. The sample was proportionate to population in each state and territory except in South Ausralia and Queensland, where the target sample was boosted to ensure a more statistically acceptable sample size. The target sample was separated proportionately into city and country areas in line with projections from 1981 Census data.;The clusters were drawn from each of Australia's Federal Electorates, and then from a number of Electoral Sub-Divisions, with probability of selection proportionate to enrolment figures for April 1984.;Within each Electoral Sub-Division, clusters were distributed to Census collector's districts with probabilities of selection proportional to size. Within each selected collectors' district, a random starting point was nominated and a cluster of consecutive households called upon. Interviews were commenced with those households where nobody was at home or where there was a temporary refusal during the two most recent Monitors in the same area, and then consecutive households.;Equal numbers of effective interviews with males and females aged 14 years and over, based on age quota, were obtained in each sample locality. One person only was interviewed in each household.
