Study TitleTasmanian visitor survey, 1988: File cir
Primary InvestigatorTasmania, T.
ADA IDau.edu.anu.ada.ddi.00550-cir
AbstractThe Tasmania Visitor Surveys have been conducted since 1978 by Tourism Tasmania. The primary objective of the study was to estimate the volume of visitor travel to Tasmania and to obtain information on certain aspects of tourist travel. This study is comprised of 3 data files. The first contains details from the 'contact interview records' (CIR) of individuals departing the state who did not answer either of the two surveys, the second is a short survey of Tasmanians departing the State plus their CIR's. The last data file comprises the visitors survey. Topics covered include: main purpose for travel; factor which prompted visitor to choose Tasmania; length of stay; nights spent in accommodation; main form of transport within the State; expenditure in Tasmania; number of previous visits; participation in selected activities. Background variables include age, sex, employment, income, postcode (Australian visitors) or country (overseas visitors) of home address, purpose of travel, data, and, mode and point of departure.

Methodology Content
Sampling ProcedureA sample of departing passengers from scheduled domestic and international flights, and the Bass Strait vehicular ferry was made by contacting every nth selected person. The aim was to sample 3 percent of departing passengers. At the airports, each interviewer was assigned a carrier and, starting with a random number, selected every third international flight from Hobart, every eleventh domestic flight from Hobart and Launceston, and every fifteenth domestic flight from Devonport and Wynyard. By means of a referral system, which operated with the assistance of the airline personnel, every third passenger on a selected flight was sampled at Hobart and Launceston, and every second passenger at Devonport and Wynyard. At Devonport, the interviewers selected every fourth sailing of the 'Abel Tasman' and sampled every eighth passenger boarding via the departure lounge or in a motor vehicle. At each interview, the passenger's age and sex were recorded and the interviewer asked whether he or she was a resident of Tasmania or a visitor to the State. Minors (i.e. under 15 years of age) were asked who they were travelling with and the interview was then terminated. Tasmanians aged 15 years and over were asked how long they intended being out of the State. If they were returning the same day or were staying away more than twelve months, the interview was terminated. The remainder were offered a questionnaire, reply-paid envelope and biro, and were asked to provide information about their travel arrangements and intentions. Visitors aged 15 years and over were asked how many nights they had spent in the State. If zero, i.e. the passenger was an excursionist, the interview was terminated. Those who had spent one or more nights in the State were offered a questionnaire, reply-paid envelope and biro, and were asked to provide information about their current visit.

Title (documentation)Tasmanian visitor survey, 1988: File cir
WeightingTwo weight variables are employed: the CIREXP (contact interview record expansion factor) and the VSQEXP (visitor questionnaire expansion factor). CIREXP: For the ith cell of the 108 (month x carrier x port) cells it is known that the Ni passengers departing (as determined from the carrier's manifasts) on ni actually complete a contact interview record. The number Ni/ni estimates the number of persons in the total population that each respondent represents. Eg. 5000 passengers depart via Hobart airport in May flying TAA. Of these 100 are interviewed. Thus each contact interview record for this group represents an estimated 5000/100=50 persons. This factor is used when creating expanded tables. VSQEXP: This is very similar to the CIR Expansion factor. However, for the ith cell the number ni will be smaller as only a subset of people interviewed receive a questionnaire and not all persons return their questionnaire. The number Ni will be the same. Consequently the VSQ expansion factor for the ith cell will always be greater than or (improbably equal to the CIREXP) for that cell.
