AbstractSurveys of the mathematical achievement of high school students were carried out in twelve countries. This dataset contains the data from the Australian study in a structure designed to correspond to the data files from a subsequent study, carried out in 1978 (see SSDA study no. 71). The two study-design aimed to investigate changes in secondary school mathematics over the 14 year period. Students completed a mathematics test; an opinion questionnaire on the importance of mathematics, the facility of mathematics, the teaching of mathematics, school enjoyment and control over the environment; and background questionnaire on demographic and mathematical education variables. Questionnaires were also completed by teachers and school principals.

Population (Universe)All students of age 13:0 to 13:11 on 1st August 1964 in normal classes in year 7, year 8 and year 9 in government schools in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania; and full-time final year students in government schools as follows: New South Wales: All 5th year students taking Mathematics I and/or Mathematics II (Pass or Honours) or Mathematics III, or Applied Mathematics for the Leaving examination. Victoria: All Form VI students taking Pure Mathematics and/or Calculus and Applied Mathematics or General Mathematics for the Matriculation examination. Queensland: All 5th year students taking Mathematics I and/or Mathematics II for the Senior Public examination. Western Australia: All year 5 students taking Mathematics A or Mathematics B for the Leaving Certificate examination. Tasmania: All year V or Year VI students taking Mathematics A (Advanced Level) and/or Mathematics B for the Matriculation examination. 13 year old students and Year 12 maths students in government schools in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania

Sampling Proceduremulti-stage sample It may be seen from the table below that the target population included primary school students in three states. The sampling design was therefore based on eight strata, consisting of primary students in year 7 in three of the states and secondary students in all five states.
